Preaching, Teaching, and Notes

What is the chaff to the wheat?

Jeremiah 23:28 “The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream;  and he that hath My Word, let him speak My Word faithfully.   What is the chaff to the wheat?  Saith the Lord.”

Jeremiah was a prophet to Judah under the last godly king, Josiah….and under the three kings which were after till the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple.

He has tried to teach the people the sufficiency of the Lord….and the uselessness of trusting to Egypt, or any other league.

He has told them to submit to the chastening of the Lord….and remember HIs Word and “amend their ways”….

….and then the Lord will cause them to dwell in the land God gave them.

He has preached:

Jeremiah 7:1-3 “The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house,  and proclaim there this Word,   and say,  Hear the Word of the Lord, all ye of Judah  that enter in at these gates to worship the Lord.

Thus saith the Lord of hosts,  the God of Israel,    Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.”

And how were they to “amend” their ways?

“…if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbor;…

If ye oppress not the stranger,  the fatherless, and the widow,….

            And shed not innocent blood….

…neither walk after other gods to your hurt:”   (Jeremiah 7:5-6)

Jeremiah 23:28 “The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream;  and he that hath My Word, let him speak My Word faithfully,    What is the chaff to the wheat?  Saith the Lord.”

My husband received this verse for his messages once, years ago.   It seemed as though people were getting tired of hearing about…”Deny ourselves, pick up our cross, and follow the Lord.”

They were tired of the precepts of the Word….and wanted more of the promises of the Word.

Praying about it….my husband received this verse:   this he was to do:

He was to preach God’s Word for the need of the church….faithfully.

“What is the chaff to the wheat?”     What does this mean?

Back in the days of the scripture….they used the winnowing method of separating the chaff, which was the outer husk….pretty much useless,

….from the wheat…the real prize.   The food that was needed.

The gathered grain,  would be placed in a heap in a large blanket and held by two people on either side…and would be tossed up.

The wind would blow the light chaff away….but the heavier kernel of wheat would fall back and be saved.

Can bread be made with chaff?   No….only the wheat can be made into bread.

Can the promises of God be used without obeying the precepts of God?

Precept both in the Hebrew and Greek, means injunction,   an authoritative prescription!

(Injunction is a court order requiring a party to do or refrain from doing a specific act.)

And as our King and our Physician,  Christ Jesus gives us precepts which are to teach us to walk in the paths of righteousness….to stand against the wiles of the devil,….to prepare us against the onslaught of the world’s temptations….which lead to us be healed.

Which leads us into the blessings of the promises He has for us.

Jeremiah 7:5,7 “For if ye thoroughly amend your ways and your doings;….

Then will I cause you to dwell in this place in the land that I gave to your fathers,  for ever and ever.”

We must lose the chaff before the wheat is useable….

…….and we must “lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us”….before we can “run with patience the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1)

Jeremiah 23:28 “The prophet that hath a dream,  let him tell a dream:  and he that hath My Word, let him speak My Word faithfully.   What is the chaff to the wheat? Saith the Lord.”

The chaff will blow away….the wheat will remain…..if we speak His Word faithfully.

And it is the wheat after all,  that counts.
