Temperance

Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

We have talked of the fruit of the Spirit before, but I wish to speak of:

Temperance.

We have heard of moderation in all things. This is a good policy for many things; but temperance here is a fruit of the blessed Holy Spirit.

It is the ability to master everything which comes to us, in our lives. (Not let them master us.)

As Christians, we face fears, tempers, passions, and opinions on all sides.

But the Holy Spirit within gives us help with all of these. He gives us God’s love, God’s joy and peace, and yes, God’s right-thinking.

2 Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

This is temperance:

Proverbs 30:7-9 “Two things have I required of Thee; deny me them not before I die:

Remove far from me vanity and lies; give me neither poverty or riches; feed me with food convenient for me:

Lest I be full, and deny Thee, and say, Who is the Lord? Or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.”

Proverbs are mostly Solomon’s sayings, and he is asking the Lord, that before he grows old and dies, he wants to learn two important things; so he asks God to “remove” or cast away from him vanity and lies.

Vanity is that nothingness that the world is full of.

The world would tell us that we should all look like this model, or that actress or athlete.

Or the world would get us to concentrate on physical, or intellectual pursuits.

Solomon did all of these:

Ecclesiastes 1:16-17 “I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart hath great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.”

Ecclesiastes 2:8-9, 11 “I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.

So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.

Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had labored to do: and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.”

His conclusion from all his experiences in the goods of the world?

Ecclesiastes 12:13 “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”

He wanted to be removed from vanity, “And lies”. The world is full of them. Try this toothpaste and your smile will brighten a whole room! (There are many lies, which are passed around each day; silly ones, and serious ones.)

“Give me neither poverty nor riches; Lest I be full, and deny Thee”:

I will begin to trust in my riches,…..and not in You.

“Lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.”

I will be angry that I do not have what others have; and try and get it in unlawful means (there are many kinds of thieves),

And blame the Lord for “making me do it.” (we often blame God for what we have gotten ourselves into)

“Feed me with food convenient for me:”. This is the same prayer as:

“Give me this day my daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11)

Someone has said: This is not, Give me my daily cake,…..but bread.

It means, that we are asking the Lord to provide for us, what we need. To give us enough:

Enough peace, money, food, family, friends, joy,…enough to get us through our lives; with Him.

Because I must remind you, that temperance is a fruit of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Temperance is to master a thing—not it mastering you.

And the Holy Spirit bears that fruit within us and through us, as we yield to Him in each situation.

Right place, God’s Will, our Surrender

Esther 5:1 “Now it came to pass on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the kings house,…”

Obedience to a command from God, we often think, will turn out well….

Yet here, Esther, a Jewish woman, made queen in Persia, stands in a place of complete surrender….not to the command of God,….but to the Will of God.

You may say that there is no difference….but the Will of God transcends “good”, and “bad”.

It is what God intends done, how He intends done, and for the Purpose which pleases Him.

(As believers, we obey His commands,…..or not; but we “fit into” His Will by surrender to Him….whatever happens.)

(Someone has written that God and prayer, is never mentioned in this book…and it is true. These people, when they had the chance to return to Israel, and build lives in the land God gave them, refused….for they now had lives in Persia.

But equally true, is that wherever His people are….He has His eye on them.

He does not forget them, but brings His Will to pass,….even through them; and for them…..though it is not in the same personal way He does for those who gather close to Him.)

Background:

Persia had conquered Babylon and had given invitation “to all of a willing heart to return to Israel and build a house for God”, to do so.

They had, and God had helped them….though they had many enemies.

Yet, now, things are going to take a dramatic turn. Back in Persia…..

Two things happen: The king, Ahasuerus, wants a new queen….and a Jewish woman, Esther is picked as one of the choices.

And Haman, an Agagite (a descendent from a people who, since Israel came out of Egypt, have sought to destroy them….down through the generations Exodus 17:16)……this man comes to power, in the king’s court.

This is a battle brewing which is amazing to read…..for behind the scenes is God working His Will….even in the things which seem to work for His people’s hurt.

Esther is the niece of Mordecai. And when Esther is taken to court, Mordecai tells Esther not to lie about her heritage, but only to keep quiet about it.

Esther 2:17 “And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favor in his sight…..so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen…”

And when she is chosen as queen, Mordecai warns her again, to hold her peace….at that time there was no danger….but soon enough, there will be.

He will be at the gate, sitting each day, if she needs to send a message to him.

(During this time, Mordecai has a chance to do the king some kindness: he overhears two men servants plotting the kings death…and he sends word to Esther. She tells the kings servants in Mordecai’s name, and they stop the assassination plot….and the deed is written in the Chronicles of the king. Esther 2:21-23)

Esther 3:1-2 “After these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman….the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.

And all the kings servants, that were with him in the king’s gate, bowed, and reverenced Haman:…”

Here comes the trouble. Haman is promoted above everyone else! Exactly the kind of power this evil person would want. Real influence with the king, and in court….people bowing….this is the life.

But a man who sits at the gate…..and yes, this is Mordecai….does not bow to him.

Esther 3:2,5-6 “….but Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence.

And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence, then was Haman full of wrath.

And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had showed him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.”

What should Haman care?

But it infuriates him…..so much so, that he finds out that Mordecai is an Israelite….and he begins a plan….to destroy him and all his people—everywhere in the kingdom.

(As I said….the Agagite of the Amalekites, were sworn enemies of Israel…and he is taking vengeance, not just on Mordecai but on every last Israelite he can.)

Now, let me ask you….was it God’s Will that Mordecai not bow? Or just an occasion to the Adversary, the devil, to stir up trouble?

(True conviction is of the Holy Spirit…and if followed, will lead to more knowledge of God’s Will for ourselves…..but it must needs be followed through, no matter what it costs you.

Mordecai had the conviction for himself that he could not bow to an enemy of his people, so….he did not bow. But it could bring terrible trouble not just for him, but for his people.)

Haman now had to persuade the king to make a decree for all the Jews to be slain.

(It is interesting to note, that the decrees of the Medes and Persians were unbreakable…”altereth not” (Daniel 6:8)….but we will see how God changes what man decrees,…..and does all His Will.)

Haman goes to the king with a lie…”there is a people…their laws are diverse from all people; neither keep the king’s laws: therefore it is not for the king’s profit to suffer them (put up with them)”. So Haman offers money to the king to pay for the cost of destroying them. The king believes Haman, and so the plan is made.

Then, Haman casts lots for the day of his vengeance…..

Esther 3:7 “In the first month,….they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, to the twelfth month….”

…and when he does, he places his plans unwittingly under the Will of God….for the lot—like dice thrown in chance—is ruled by God. (Proverbs 16:33)

The slaughter was to be in the last month of the year, a whole year away.

It was then proclaimed through the nations under Persia….and when the Israelites heard it, they wept, and lay in sackcloth and ashes.

What could be done?

But God is not upset…His plan is already in motion, although unseen.

Mordecai did not know what to do….but he showed the decree to Esther, and asked her to talk to the king. She was saddened, but she did not know what to do either.

Even she could not go into the king, unless she be called…..and she hadn’t for thirty days.

And if she did without being called she could be killed…..unless he would hold out his scepter to her.

Mordecai realizes this is why she was there….and even though she was afraid, he was faithful, and told her the truth (“speaking the truth in love” Ephesians 4:15):

Esther 4:13–14 “Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shall escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews.

For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed:

And who knowest wither thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

Now was the time, to stand up and be shown as an Israelite…no matter what the outcome for her or her people. Her duty was shown to her….now it was up to her.

(This is a word in due season… Proverbs 15:23. How many times, we too need a word given us, to remind us of Jesus’ Way for us)

Plainly, after hiding in the palace for some time, Esther did not want to show the king her people. If she was out of favor, she could do no good…for them or herself.

But Mordecai’s words brought her to see the situation clearly…..and her duty.

Mordecai believed that Israel would survive….somehow. He might die, and she might die….but deliverance would come;…..but he thought maybe Esther was “come into this position,….to do this very thing.”

Esther 4:15-16 “Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer,

Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise: and so I will go into the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.”

This was not said in despair or passion, but in holy resolve to do her duty….no matter what happened to her.

And so she did her duty….she came into the court…..and was accepted by the king.

Esther 5:2 “And it was so, when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, that she obtained favor in his sight: and the king held out to Esther the golden scepter that was in his hand. So Esther drew near, and touched the top of the scepter.”

The king asks her, What is thy request?

Esther does not charge right into the matter, but….knowing the king,….she invites him and Haman to a banquet for the next two days, where she promised to tell the king what is on her mind….

They come to the first, and Haman is proud as a peacock in his privileged position;……bragging to all his family and friends.

In between the two days, the king can not sleep…..(and here is the amazing part):

The king hears in the Chronicles which are read to him,….(to help put him to sleep)…..about Mordecai’s saving him from assignation.

But what had been done for him, as a reward? Nothing…..so…

The next morning, Haman, so full of pride, comes into the king….wanting to talk of killing Mordecai, that very day….no waiting for the rest of the Israelites….he wanted his blood now.

But, he gets a surprise…the king wanted to honor Mordecai for saving him!

Esther 6:6, 10 “So Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honor?

Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honor more than to myself?

Then the king said to Haman, Make haste, and take the apparel and the horse, as thou hast said, and do even so to Mordecai the Jew,….”

The very person Haman wanted dead, he had to help honor……this was not what he had planned….but God has more surprises for him.

In the second banquet, Esther tells the king of Haman’s plot to destroy her people….he listens to her, and ends in destroying Haman.

The enemy is destroyed, but what about the unchangable decree against the Israelites?

How will God take care of that?

Well, the king promotes Mordecai….telling him that the decree can not be altered…..

….but, he can do what he can…..

And God made a way: they made a second decree….so that the Israelites could destroy all those that would come against them…..signed by the king….backed up by the king.

and that sent fear into their enemies,….and stopped the massacre of the Israelites!

Against all odds….God saw to His people.

And the principle is the same for us.

How many times things seem impossible and against us, and Him….but He is working His Will….perhaps puffing up those proud rebels….just enough to destroy themselves.

Perhaps putting us in a place of duty, to do His Will,……speaking His Word faithfully.

Psalm 94:21-23 “They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.

But the Lord is my defense; and My God is the Rock of my refuge.

And He shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the Lord our God shall cut them off.”

God still sees to us….His Will is still being done.

Let us surrender to our part in it.

Are There Shadows in Your Christian Life?

Song of Solomon 4:6 “Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense.”

When we are born again, we are given the Holy Spirit and a new nature. One that loves God, and wants to please Him.

But we are Spiritual Babes, and often fail the Lord, when called to follow on with Him.

It is the Spiritual growth of our lives that brings us, as babes, to full grown children.

Ephesians 4:13-15 “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ:

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:”

To bring us to this point,……the Lord, through His Word, and by the Holy Spirit within us, will bring us to the Light again and again; till we are walking in it, with no Shadows between us. (1 John 1:7)

We fail, often, to fully realize that our own Natural Aversion to all things of God, is a clear manifestation of the ever present Old Nature within us. The old man wants his own will, and rebels at being in subjection to God.

Galatians 5:16-17 “This I say then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.

For the flesh lusteth (fights) against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary one to another; so that ye can not do the things that ye would.”

It is the flesh which “attacks” the new nature which is of God within us,….for it still seeks to rule us, with our old habits, attitudes, and affections.

Romans 8:13-14 “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

The “flesh”, “old man”, is our old nature; and remains in us, even though we have become born again.

We are to choose to obey the Spirit of God within us, and walk in the Light; so that the old nature is kept in subjection to Christ.

God’s Light, when it is submitted to, yields Power within us to do His Will.

It is a process.

This is an act of the will.

“…If ye do through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”

And what a life! A life with the power of the Holy Spirit in us, and helping us, to do and be His Will!

Romans 8:11 “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you.”

Quicken is to make alive, active, and effective. As I said, What a life!

Mortify is to “put to death”.

That is, it is brought to the place where it has no influence in us.

Thus by an act of our wills, willing with the Holy Spirit, we do put to death the natural life, that it might become Christ’s life in us.

Song of Solomon 4:6 “Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense.”

Where Shadows are in our life, full Light has not come.

Shadows are cast by something between the Light source (Christ’s Life), and that which is lighted (us).

It is a mountain of myrrh (which speaks of death), because it takes a lot of denying ourselves, and yielding to the Holy Spirit.

And then it is, the hill of frankincense (which speaks of reigning authority) comes in.

For when we yield to Him, and get out of the way; it takes very little of the power of God, to empower us for His Will….in anything.

To consider these Shadows, we must go back to our very beginnings, and first consider: “Why hast Thou made me thus?”

Romans 9:20 “Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to Him who formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?”

It is a point of our rebellious old man, that we were never consulted in our being.

But just brought into being,…with the parents I had,….in these circumstances,…looking as I do;…..and then forced to deal with it.

(How many of these thoughts have we had? The sad thing: we do not bring them to the Lord and deal with them.)

Sadly, many seek meaning in things, or emotions; or in oblivion, and finding it not.

(The death wish the Psychiatrist talk about, is not just a wish to die, but a desire for non-being. To never have been; or to go into nothingness.)

But once we are, we are Eternal beings.

We will exist forever, either in Heaven with God in bliss; or in agony with the Devil.

But God has for us an “expected end”.

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

Our expected end is Christ, and the joy and peace He has for us, as we walk in His Light.

As the thing formed, we must be reconciled to God, Who formed us…..As we are.

This is a deep thing of the soul, and worked within us by the Holy Spirit in our spirit.

It is not just living because we have to; Or trying to find joy in “things”….but…

We can come to the place where we love who the Lord has made us…..really….and to enter into the life He has for us.

Here is where subjection is real…not just words.

Your spirit, with the Power of the Holy Spirit, by an act of your will, brings your soul (the place of your intelligence, affections, and will) into subjection to God’s Will.

And you do it on that mountain of myrrh.

He begins as soon as you are born again, to encourage you to deny yourself, pick up your cross, and follow Christ. (Matthew 16:24-25)

Every time you do this, His power works in you; creating in you that image of Christ in you.

Romans 8:29 “For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.”

God’s Will for you, has had it’s “beginnings” in Eternity past:

2 Timothy 1:9 “Who hath saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began;”

He thought of you in Christ Jesus before He created the world. And so has made provision for your complete Salvation from sin: the guilt, penalty, and power of sin.

These shadows, are not the sin itself; but are the influences of our sin. They cast a shadow, a darkness over us.

It may be because of self pity because we have done these things: “Oh, how could I do that? How could I be so stupid?” (I have said this to myself)

It may be that the sin is gone; because you know it will cause problems, or because of God’s chastening.

But the desire for that thing, still remains.

And must be removed, before the Shadows will “flee” away.

There is still an element of darkness in your life.

He can do it, keep coming to Him.

So many of these Shadows are of our Adversary, the Devil; deeply implanted within us , down through the years.

Things done by others, to us!

To which he has whispered many angry thoughts: “God should not have let them get by with this.”

Or thoughts of revenge.

Again, let us consider Christ Jesus’ “expected end” for us: Joy and Peace in believing.

Do you have it? Are you obtaining it everyday, by denying yourself and picking up your cross, and following Him into the Light He has for you?

You don’t have to walk in Shadows. Keep coming to Him. Listen to Him, and His Word to you.

Hang on to His Love; and know He is hanging on to you.

The man with the withered hand

I am going to speak about a poor soul….a man with a withered right hand….a man shunned in the normal life of the Israelites, yet who yields to Jesus command….even though it puts him and his infirmity, in the spotlight….

Luke 6:6-7 “And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that He entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.

And the scribes and Pharisees watched Him, whether He would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against Him.

But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.”

To have a deformity….a withered hand….in Israel, usually meant that someone in your family had sinned….you, or your parents.

It was something to hide or keep covered.

That this man wanted to hear the scriptures, and have fellowship with God and HIs people, is apparent…..for though he might be looked down upon….he was gathered to the place of worship,…anyway.

He was in the back of the men gathered….for Jesus said, “stand forth”

Jesus had come to their synagogue to teach….and He did.

He knew what was in the heart of each man there. Whether they were there to hear Him….or the Word….

…or merely to find an occasion to trip Him up.

“But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.”

This would have been putting a spotlight on his deformity….

….yet he did it. First standing,….then stepping out before everyone….”in the midst”.

This is faith. For faith sees God, and believes Him.

Then Jesus did something unusual…..He did not speak to the man….He did nothing where he was concerned….at first…

….He just left him in the midst of everyone….a spectacle….or so it might have seemed.

But again, I must stress here…..faith sees God. This man saw God in Christ, which separated him from many others here in this synagogue….

…so he stayed put, waiting….in faith.

(How often we feel that Christ is going to do something for us….and we feel His love, and gladly “step forth”….but then there is a wait.

Do we begin to doubt His love? Do we begin to “wobble” in our obedience? Will we “back away” from the Lord’s command?)

….instead Jesus turned and spoke to the scribes and Pharisees.

Luke 6:9 “Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing;….”

Jesus broke right through to the truth. He asked them to answer….with the truth.

“…Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? To save life, or to destroy it?”

Then Jesus turned and looked at each man there….

…not in anger,…..but sadness.

Saddened by the hardness of their hearts. There was no love of God….or man within them!

(In Matthew. 12:11-12….Jesus says, “What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it and lift it out?

How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.”)

….then Jesus finally spoke to the man with the withered hand…”Stretch forth thy hand.”

Luke 6:10 “And looking round about upon then all, He said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.”

When God asks us to cooperate with Him,….

….we must first believe Him….this man had;….

….then we must obey Him.

This is an amazing healing….and one we can have, for it was by HIs Word alone that this man was healed….both spiritually and physically.

For Jesus did not touch him. It does not say Jesus came close to him.

Jesus spoke….

….it was His Word, first to the man, to give him faith in Him (Romans 10:17)…”rise up and stand forth”…making him trust in Jesus…

…then HIs Word to the man for obedience to Him….faith, if it be true faith, always leads to obedience. For what kind of faith would believe, but not obey?

And that man’s faith and obedience was honored….his hand was made whole as the other.

Jesus speaks to us, today, as well……giving faith in Himself….and encouraging our faith in Him.

And He speaks to us, today….commanding us to obey, that we might be “a spectacle “ (1 Corinthians 4:9)……for He shows Himself strong in us….in salvation, in healing, and in joy and peace….

….are we hearing what He is saying to us? Are we having what He is calling us to?

What are we facing today…..and in what are we “infirm”? (Not up to the task, not able to do.)

Well, He is.

And His Word of faith and instruction still comes to us, today.

Let us stand forth with Him; and trust and obey.

The Hope of His Calling.

Ephesians 1:18 “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,”

Light that we may know the “hope of His calling”.

Hope in scripture is of the Holy Spirit….it is the confident expectation that God will do what He said….it has reference to His Word.

It is not….I hope, I hope, I hope. It is not us, working up our trust.

But the Holy Spirit assuring us……that God is True,….and what He says is sure.

Therefore, when we have hope, we will do what He has said we should do, in confidence,……expecting Him to fulfill His Word.

Psalm 130:1, 5 “Out of the depths have I cried unto Thee, O Lord.

I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in His Word do I hope.”

How many times have we waited for a sure Word from the Lord to us?

And when it came, we rejoiced that He had heard our request, our question, our cry in trouble…..and answered us.

We may not see how it will be as He said, but we know from experience that He will do what He says…..so we rejoice.

Hope causes us to rejoice.

We do not hope, from what we can see, (Romans 8:24-25),……but from the Holy Spirit within.

Romans 5:2 “By Whom also we have access by faith into the grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

It is compared to an “anchor”, for it says, “Do not look at the wind and waves around us……but look to the Lord and what He has said.”

Hebrews 6:18-19 “That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;”

When we, by the Holy Spirit, are anchored in the Lord’s Word,…..we are safe…not tossed around by every wind that blows.

Ephesians 4:14-15 “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:”

(In our Christian life, it is imperative that we can prove all things…..1 Thessalonians 5:21….by the Word,……we need to read it, so we can use it;….for ourselves and others.)

What is the “hope of His calling”?

It is the confident expectation that what He has called us to; He will provide for and lead in…..for it is His calling….we are doing what He wants us to do, to say, to pray.

Not everyone is to preach or teach….but

…all are called as witnesses….of what He has done for us.

All are called to pray…….for ourselves, our family, our church and for Jesus Christ’s coming again.

[Jesus Christ had hope in His Father’s sure Word, about His ministry:

Isaiah 53:11 “He shall see of the travail of HIs soul, and shall see be satisfied: by His knowledge shall My righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities. “

Jesus would “see”….

He would be raised from the dead, He would have those people that the Father had given Him,….come to Him, down through the generations……as a reward for His obedience to Him. (John 6:37-40).

We were His joy. (Hebrews 12:2)

His hope was in His Father’s Word…..showing us that we have a “strong consolation” in that Word…for us.]

Hope of the Holy Spirit, takes hold of our hearts, and encourages them to rejoice.

Hope takes hold of our minds, and reminds us of Who said it.

And hope takes hold of our wills, and strengthens them to persevere,…to do the work, ministry, calling that He has given us. We will obey.

1 John 3:2-3 “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is.

And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as He is pure.”

“Purifieth” and “Pure” here, means “to consecrate”……to set ourselves aside to the Lord.

Hope is our anchor in this.

We expect God to do what He said, in His time,…..and so we will do what He says, now, rejoicing.

The Healing of Ten Leper’s

Luke 17:11-12 “And it came to pass, as He went to Jerusalem, that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.

And as He entered into a certain village, there met Him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:”

Jesus is in His last year of ministry, and He is going to Jerusalem, knowing full well what will happen there. (His betrayal, suffering, death, and resurrection)

But He did not just forget everything, or everyone along the way…no..He ministered till the end.

Luke 17:13 “And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.”

So here He comes across ten lepers, all standing “afar off”….but crying out for help.

(It says “there met Him”, as if they knew He was going to pass this way, and waited to see Him)

Luke 17:14 “And when He saw them, He said unto them, Go show yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.”

Simple directions for their healing, if they follow them. And they did….and they were indeed healed, by obeying Jesus.

(Interesting fact: Leviticus 14:2 “This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing; he shall be brought unto the priest:”.

So their going to the priest was to fulfill the law, and by obeying Jesus, they were cleansed on the way.)

Luke 17:15-16 “And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,

And fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.”

Whether the other nine saw they were cleansed or not, right away, as this one did…..his “loud voice” would have told them…..but they did not turn around to give glory to God, or to thank the Lord Jesus.

No thanks is ever recorded from them. They obeyed and were healed from their leprosy…..without even a word of thanks.

(How do we react to the many blessings God gives us?)

But the one, a Samaritan, saw…returned to Jesus, praising God and giving thanks to Him…..and received further blessing.

Luke 17:19 “And He said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.”

But why does Jesus say “thy faith hath made thee whole?” Wasn’t he healed already?

Because….

This healing was of the whole man…he was saved by faith in the Lord right then.

He was healed in his body, from the leprosy….when he obeyed Jesus.

And healed in mind and heart, by joyful thanksgiving…to God.

And healed in spirit, by salvation….when Jesus declared him whole!

Then he was given direction to return to his old life, in faith! “Go thy way…”

Amazing blessings…and that for the life ahead, and for eternity,……because he came to Jesus in thanksgiving.

The nine knew God had healed them…..and their healing was enough for them, for that is all they wanted with Jesus.

(It was certainly a picture of the nation of Israel, and many; who wanted the things Jesus would do, but did not want Him)

(Are we crying out to Him for what He will do for us, and not who He is?)

But the Samaritan knew Jesus was the Son of God, and that He had healed him.

And he wanted….before anything else, to give Him thanks, for it.

We are told to:

1 Thessalonians 5:18-19 “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Quench not the Spirit.” (Don’t put out the fire of joy of the Spirit within you)

“For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus.”

Are we fulfilling this part, of the will of God, in our lives, by giving the praise that is due Christ?

Well, nine settled for the physical healing….when they could have had so much more….

….but one, came and in praise….received Jesus as Lord and Savior….and was blessed again!

What Fruits do you bear?

Matthew 7:20 “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”

Galatians 5:16-17 “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other; so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”

Once we are born again, and are given a new nature….a battle begins within us:

The old nature (our self-life), and our new nature (the life of God within us); start to battle back and forth for control of our actions, our thoughts, our emotions…

….which involve our reactions (how easy it is to do the things we have always done).

Frankly, we have lived in the soul’s sphere all our lives…..

…we think things out….

…we react from our emotions…

…we will to do what we want, if we are not stopped by some outside force.

This has been our life.

And our self-life does not stop wanting to “tell us what to do”, after we are born again.

James 4:1 “From whence comes wars and fightings among you? Come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?”

(Lust is: I want this, and I want this now….whether in thought, or action.)

Ephesians 5:24 “And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.”

“Crucified” has to do with the cross….our cross, which Jesus invites us to “deny ourselves, and pick up”. (Matthew 16:24)

Our souls must be brought into subjection to the new nature….which is from God…by our wills, willing with God.

Philippians 2:12 “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling:”

And in this, God requires us to submit to the inworking of the Holy Spirit…..Who guides us into righteousness, and works within us to will after God’s good pleasure.

Philippians 2:13 “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.”

It is yielding, again and again….to the Holy Spirit….till it becomes the heart-beat of our lives, to yield.

For it starts as a matter of the will, willing….and becomes a matter of the whole being….mind, heart and will…giving place to the blessed Holy Spirit.

This yielding, works new characteristics within us, to replace the old attitudes and actions which we set aside.

Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

Now these set forth what the Holy Spirit will work within us….

…and He begins with love.

I think this is most blessed, because in ourselves, we love the wrong things.

But in Christ, we are taught the important things of life….and learn to will to love them.

(I have said this before, that “agape”, or Christian love is not emotion…although certainly we feel it.

But it is the willed tendency of the heart to devote ourselves to Christ Jesus.

Jesus Christ always forces a choice of the will….

…..never does He say, “Well, if you feel like it….you should follow Me.” Or. “If you think this is a good idea, then follow Me.”

No, it is…..”If any man, woman, boy, or girl will,…then follow Me.”)

So, when we are born again, the Holy Spirit shows us the beauty of Christ, and says, “Will you love Him?”

When we will, then the Holy Spirit opens up our hearts to receive….and to give love…”agape”….both to Christ and to our fellow Christians.

He places it within us, and says….”work it out”….obey Him.

Then there is joy: joy is the felt presence of God in my life….it comes in any circumstances…and lifts us up, to the fullness of life, in Him…at that time.

Then there is peace. Peace gives rest….and rest of soul (mind, heart, and will) is strength, for it gives us knowledge that God is our Fortress….now. (Philippians 4:7, Psalm 18:1-2)

Then there is long-suffering…waiting for others, remembering how God has waited for us.

gentleness,….being kind.

goodness,…acting right toward others.

faith,…keeping God in front of us in all circumstances.

temperance,….even tempered.

meekness….seeing ourselves the way we are before God.

…all of these characteristics of Christ are worked within our personalities by us yielding to the Holy Spirit within.

They build on one another….each supplying in our personalities a strength….so that we can use all the grace God gives.

Are we bearing these fruits?

Egypt…in scripture

I want to speak about our Help.  So many times we look to others, who we see as “stronger” than us,….or more experienced, or which we think have more of what we need.

        But…

        We are to look to the Lord, “….from whence cometh my help.  My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2)

From the earliest times in scripture, Egypt has been a temptation to the people of God

Egypt is a type of the world system (mighty, showy, and full of idols)……and Pharoah, a type of the devil (seeking to enslave the people of God.duet.6:21)

When Abraham came into the land God called him to, and there was a famine…..instead of trusting God who called him to the land,….or seeking direction for what he should do,….or for provision in the famine….

…Abraham went down to Egypt….to  seek relief from trouble. 

(And got into a whole lot of trouble down there. Genesis 12:9-20, 16:1)

When Jacob was told to go to Egypt (and he was told to go)….his children became immersed in the ways of the Egyptians….even to worshiping their gods. 

       Lev.20:7 “Then said I (the Lord) unto them,   Cast ye away every man the abominations of his eyes, and defile not yourselves with  the idols of Egypt:  I am the Lord your God.”

When Israel was delivered from the bondage…God did not take them through the land of the Philistines….because the people would go back to Egypt when they would experience war.    

(Exodus 13:17)

The Lord told them plainly….”…the Lord hath said unto you,  Ye shall henceforth return no more that way (to Egypt).” Deuteronomy 17:16

But  they kept wanting to return. 

Numbers 14:3-4 “And wherefore hath the Lord brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey?  Were it not better for us to return into Egypt?

     And they said one to another,   Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.”

Israel sought to Egypt even in treaties…

Isaiah 30:1-2 “Woe to the rebellious children, saith  the Lord, that take counsel, but not of Me:…

     That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at My mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt.” 

(Jeremiah 2:18, Jeremiah 35:5,7…many times they turned to Egypt for help….when God would have been their help, if they had sought unto Him) 

They  were warned so many times against this…for Egypt was no help….but like a broken reed to lean upon.

Isaiah 36:6 “Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into this hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.”

I want to say, that Egypt was a mighty nation.  As the world is now….it is a force to be reckoned with.    But….they were to come out of it…

…..and serve the Lord.

(I said before, that in the scriptures, Egypt is a type of the world, and Pharaoh, a type of the devil.   

        It is interesting to note that when Moses told Pharaoh,  “Thus saith the Lord,  let my people go that they may worship me.”….that when the might of God was shown….all Pharoah did was to compromise….wanting above all else to keep his power over the people…

….just as the devil does the children of God.

        At first it was….no….I do not know the Lord.

Then, it was with every judgment….Pharaoh hardened his heart….and refused to let them go.

       But when God made a division in the judgment….Israel had none, but the rest of Egypt had the judgments….then…

…Pharaoh began to bargain:  

First it was: worship…in the land.(Exodus 8:25)

Then it was….go ahead, worship in the wilderness….but ye shall not go very far away. (Exodus 8:28)

Then it was….only the men should go to worship (Exodus 10:11)

Then it was….the people can go, but their flocks and herds must stay (Exodus 10:24)

It is the same with the world and the devil’s wiles…..

…don’t be so fanatic.  

God can be worshiped at home.   You do not have to go to church.

     Sunday is a day off.   Your children go to school.  Go to church if you want,  but don’t make them go.

     Ok,  go to church on Sunday morning….but don’t give “too much” extra time,  or your money….remember you have to make ends meet for yourself….and those extra things the children want…remember them.

These might not be the words, or temptations that are used on all of us.   But the world and the devil do not like to give up their hold on us….

….but God delivers.

Psalm 140:1-2 “Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;

     Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.”)

The Lord has told us:

2 Corinthians 6:17-7:1 “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 

     And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

     Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

But why are we to “come out” from the world?        To serve our God.

Jesus said,   “For what is a man profited….”

     (and “profit” is what the world is looking for)  “…if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?  or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”

Sometimes I believe, we Christians are like the children of Israel, when they thought about Egypt…..they didn’t remember the bondage and death….but the “flesh pots”, the cucumbers and leeks…(Numbers 11:4-5)

…the good stuff.

But let us consider for a moment….what we gain in Christ….

      First let us consider the kingdom of God:

Romans 14:17 “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink;  but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.”

This is our kingdom.   We belong to King Jesus, and as He rules in me,…

… He brings righteousness (a path that is right through this world that is wrong. And good works for me to do along the way.).

…He brings peace (peace with God…where I can come before Him anytime….and a settled calm in the midst of the world’s torrents and storm)

…He brings joy in the Holy Ghost (a bouyancy that keeps looking toward the Lord, and His Purpose for me…..amid trouble….and prosperity.)

Then let us consider our strength….for when we consider our enemies, our fears, and our troubles….we need Strength.

Romans 8:35-39 “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?…shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

As it is written, For Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

    Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.

    For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, not things to come,

    Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separte us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

     Let me just say,  that when we know the true love of the Lord for us, in this moment…we are encouraged, strengthened, empowered to do and be for Him.    

      For in the world we have persecution and tribulation, “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” 2 Timothy 3:12

Yet Jesus has already seen to us.  He said:

      John 16:33 “These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace.   In the world ye shall have tribulation:  but be of good cheer;  I have overcome the world.”

Let us be “of good cheer”…which means “to have both comfort and courage.”

Let us not go back to the world…

…Egypt did Israel no good….and the world will yield us no blessings….

……but, since we have come out from it….let us cross this wilderness world….learn to trust in the Almighty God…..and enter into all that Jesus Christ has won for us….

….for this is true “profit”.

 The barriers we erect…have we become “comfortable” away from Christ?

Song of Solomon 2:8-10 “The voice of my Beloved! behold, He cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills.

       My beloved is like a roe or a young hart:  behold, He standeth behind our wall, He looketh forth at the windows, shewing Himself through the lattice.

       My Beloved spake, and said unto me,  Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.”

Here is a picture of our Lord Jesus Christ coming and calling us on.   

       But there is a barrier….a wall that separates us from the Lord.

(I talked with a woman once about knowing Christ Jesus in a more personal relationship.  As I was dealing with her, she finally stopped the conversation with:

      “I am comfortable where I am with Christ.”

Have we gotten comfortable where we are with Christ…or are we pressing on? Philippians 3:12-14)

The next thing we need to see….is that it is His Voice which awakens us to our condition.

      And how many times does He use His Word, spoken by preachers, teachers, or through devotions…to awaken us to His call.

      He calls us to “rise up and come away”….indicating that there is something to leave….and something to go on to.

This wall is our spiritual experience…up-to-date.    It is “our wall”….not my wall or His wall…but a wall that is built by the things we go through because we are the Lord’s.

Some of these things leave us feeling exuberant….some of these things leave us feeling wounded….some of these things are simply building blocks we are to use to go on…but we don’t. 

Now let us deal with that wall.  

     A wall is made up on stones, bricks….pieces of things in our lives….which begin to pile up.

For the most part…they are simple commands which have not been obeyed.   Things that just need to be done….or seen to.

For some, it is a matter of destroying certain blocks of the wall.  Things that you must give up!  

     (Here is where personal conviction comes in.   Things that may be alright for others to do….but I can not….because the Lord will not let me. 

     The places we go,  the things we allow, are they part of God’s plan for me…..do they help me grow in grace….or am I walking on the edge, next to the world system?

     1 Corinthians 6:12 “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient:  all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”    [Also in 1 Cor. 10:23.]

      Expedient  means here to contribute, to give advantage.   

Not everything contributes to my spirituality….my growth in Christ.

     I would mention here, as well,….that some believe there is no gray area in our spiritual life.  It is either God’s Will,  or not (I believe this).    Some believe in a gray area.   

     There are certainly lots of pursuits which are not right.   Those we need to give up right away.

But there are others….which are pleasurable which are not wrong….yet need to be sanctified or set aside to God.

For others, it is a matter of discarding certain things of your spiritual childhood…and going on to more mature things, with Him.

Putting away childish things.

1 Corinthians 13:11 “When I was a child,  I spake as a child,   I understood as a child,  I thought as a child:  but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”

Paul has been speaking of the love of Christ which should separate us from many things we would normally feel or do.

     Love suffereth long and is kind!   Love does not envy others!  Love seeks not her own, is not easily angered!

     Whose love acts like this?

     It is only One….the Lord Jesus Christ’s love…in us, and through us.

Then Paul speaks of the doing away of…“things in part”….

…prophesies will be fulfilled and become history.

…every language will be done away with….when Christ comes.

Then comes the statement….”When I was a child…”

     Paul wanted the Corinthians,… who were acting childish….going off into cliches….taking sides and not acting for the whole group….to know, that he too, had to grow up into Christ.

And how had he done that?    By “putting away” childish things, in speech….in his understanding of God’s dealings….in his thoughts about others.    

And how is that done?   By Christ’s love replacing my thoughts, attitudes, and reactions to everything which the Lord sends  my way.

(My  husband preached on this verse….

       Childish speaking…..”it got broke”.     When a child is playing  ball, and the ball breaks a glass or vase….a child will say, when asked what happened….”the ball hit it!”

       But when we become a man,   we take responsibility for our actions….and their consequences…”I broke it”.

Childish understanding….is limited to the experience that the child would have had., and often is limited to what they want to believe.

      Paul had known the same scriptures before and after the martyrdom of Stephen….but he got “exceeding mad” at the new understanding that Stephen’s message gave him.   He did not want to believe it….so he refused it.    Till the blinding Light of Christ made him give up his childish refusal….and surrender to God’s love.

Childish thoughts….are always putting us in the center of everything….in the foreground of all reactions.    How does this affect me?   How will I look if I do this?   What will people think?

     But when we put away childish thoughts….we begin to seek the glory of the Lord,  first….and leave ourselves in the Lord’s hands.

Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and HIs righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” )

There are many pieces of our spiritual experience up-to-date that we need to see done.

We need to place ourselves into the mighty flood of Christ’s love….and hear the call to let them go….and go on to more fuller experiences with Christ.

Song of Solomon 2:8, 10 “The Voice of my Beloved!  Behold, He cometh leaping upon the mountains…”

(Have you started leaping over those impossible difficulties in your feelings, in your conversations, and in your actions toward others?)

“….skipping upon the hills.” 

(Have you begun to know true victory over the little irritants and frustrations which attack you every day?)

“My Beloved spake, and said unto me,  Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.”

(“My love”….how much we need the more mature manifestations of HIs love to us…that constant fellowship of peace and joy.)

Have we heard HIs voice? Are we ready to see to “our wall”?

Redeeming the time

Ephesians 5:15-16 “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”

How can we “redeem the time”?

“Redeeming” here, means “to rescue from loss, to improve opportunities”.

Here in Ephesians,….

…(in a book written to explain the privileges we have in Christ…”who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:”)

……we have a warning.

We are not to let time slip through our fingers….

….we are, in fact, to rescue each day from the loss of natural pursuits….to the gain of spiritual walking in the Spirit.

Colossians 4:5 “Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.”

We each have so much time….

Psalm 90:12 “Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”

This is not asking for the certain number we are going to live…..

……but rather for an understanding that we are created for a purpose.

We all have a “reason” God created us….therefore let us get His wisdom (guidance) to fulfill it.

The Holy Spirit is given us to be our Comforter….Paraclete, or Someone who comes beside to help.

But He comes with grace: the unmerited favor of power….grace which gives us ability, and knowledge, and strength.

Grace He gives us, to use our time wisely.

The saying, “we are in the world, but not of it”….should hold true.

We are not to share in its interests or opinions,….but rather let the Word of God mold us into HIs servants….faithful to Him.

Romans 13:11-13 “And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light,

Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.”

Here is a picture of a Christian, who having heard the alarm clock of God to wake up….does so.

(How many times has God tried to awaken us! To get us to see the importance of our time. Maybe we think we are of little importance….but God does not think so.

If we gave one person the Word of God….only one person saw the Light and came to Christ….

…now think if that one person was your child, your spouse, your best friend….your neighbor.)

Well, this Christian jumps up out of the chair he fell asleep in….and sees that the light is shining….

…he is late! He best be going! For he is not sure for how long the light will continue to shine….there might be clouds rolling in.

But before he goes, he realizes that he is still wearing yesterday’s clothes….still wearing the muddy shoes from yesterday….

….he needs to change….clean himself up….and prepare himself for the day ahead….

Once he is cleaned up…..he realizes that he is going to do God’s business…..not his, so he better find out how the Lord wants him to dress.

(What is the “armor of light”?

1 Thessalonians 5:8 “But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.”

Our armor is the graces we have acquired under the training of the Holy Spirit.

We are given faith at new birth….but it is a covering for our heart and will….only as we use it to keep close to the Lord….in love to Him.

The Holy Spirit gives us hope (the confident expectation that God will do what He said)….to cover our reasons and thoughts….to keep us thinking….not with the world….but with the Word of God.

Faith, Love, Hope……These are enlightening….Light which shines and illuminates the dark places we must travel in this world.)

Once dressed, the Christian prepares to walk, and work…..in honesty. Determining to do….only what is fit to be seen in the light of day….

…in other words….dress in the character of Christ.

Romans 13:14 “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.”

And….he begins to redeem his time….this day….

Ephesians 5:14 “Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.”

Are you awake? Or still half-asleep?

Are you prepared with the armor of light? Or still wearing the “clothes” of yesterday?
