Perfect Peace

Isaiah 26:3 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee, because he trusteth in Thee.”

For our ladies prayer meeting…one of the things we do is have a memory verse. One verse we try and memorize for a couple of weeks….

…and this is the one we are on now..

Perfect, in every application means “to complete”.

But it depends on the context.

For Noah, who was “perfect in his generations”… meant he was complete in moral integrity.

It means undefiled with the world around, it means peaceable….it means to stop the failures (Psalm 138:8 “The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me…”)…

…it means to repair, to finish without wavering.

John 17:23 “I in them, and Thou in Me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that Thou hast sent Me, and hast loved them, as Thou hast loved Me.”

To have “perfect peace” we must “stay our mind” on Christ…..we must trust Him.

Often our peace wavers….it is good, one moment….and shaky the next.

(I want to give an example here….Abraham, whose son Isaac was a young man now…is told to go and sacrifice him to the Lord.

In this day, we might think that Abraham could have set in his tent, and “by faith” thought about going to Mt. Moriah and sacrificing Isaac there.

After all, God doesn’t really want to have Isaac killed….for in Isaac, the promises given Abraham…will be carried on.

But Abraham believes God….and knows that faith does not sit still, but does what it is told…it trusts and obeys.

A three day journey would have added anxiety to fear….but we only read of the obedience of this old man, and his son.

Leaving the men that they bought with them at the foot of the mountain, Isaac and Abraham climb the mountain….and Abraham binds Isaac with cords and places him on the wood for sacrifice.

Hebrews 11:17,19 “By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.”

Ready to slay his son, God stops him,…

….”Lay not thine hand upon the lad,….for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.” (Genesis 22:12)

Abraham had perfect peace….for he placed his hand in the hand of God.

He placed his son, his promises, his life to come, on the Word of Him Who can not fail.

Abraham called the place Jehovah-jireh….which means the Lord will see to it.)

Isaiah 26:3 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee, because he trusteth in Thee.”

To be “stayed” means that the Lord and you work together…

….to keep our minds from wandering into….imaginations.

…to keep the reasons which attack us…about why we should not do the Lord’s Will…away from holding our minds captive.

….to keep our minds from being swayed by the emotions which flow over us….fear, inordinate affections, pride….

“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;” (2 Corinthians 10:5)

Our duty is to trust….to hold on to the Lord.

Sometimes that hold is for dear life….sometimes it is an arm in arm hold when we are walking together…

…but it is always “holding on” to Christ Jesus our Lord, trusting that He knows best….and that He will see to us.
